The Rules of DanceSport

These rules take effect on 1 January 2027.

They are not in force yet. Until 1 January 2027, every competition is still governed by the current Competition Rules, and it is those you must follow and be judged against today. This page is published now so that competitors, officials and organisers can read what is coming and prepare for it.

From 1 January 2027 these rules will govern every competition registered with DanceSport Australia - who may enter, what may be worn, how events are run, and how competitors, officials and organisers are expected to behave. They will apply to members, to registered organisers, and at a registered competition to everybody present.

They are published as a wiki rather than a document. Every clause has its own address, so a rule can be linked to directly in an email, a complaint or an entry condition, and the version you are reading is always the latest. There is no PDF to check the date on.

Ask a question

Ask in your own words. You do not need to know a rule number, and you do not need to guess the right heading - describe your situation and the relevant clauses are found for you.

The rules this comes from

Rules of DanceSport 41.1 41 ADVERTISING AND SPONSORSHIP

41.1 A Competitor must not wear any advertising logo, Sponsor logo or Designer Label on competition attire unless it has been approved under this Rule and recorded in the Sponsor Tag Register.

Rules of DanceSport 41.5 41 ADVERTISING AND SPONSORSHIP

41.5 The wearing of a manufacturer’s Designer Label on competition attire is permitted where that Designer Label has been approved and recorded in the Sponsor Tag Register. (a) A Designer Label is approved once, for the manufacturer or maker. Once approved it may be worn by any Competitor on an item of competition attire made by that manufacturer or maker, and a separate approval is not required for each Competitor. (b) A Designer Label is subject to Rule 41.4 in the same way as a Sponsor logo, and may not exceed the size, or be worn in any position other than those, permitted by that Rule.

Rules of DanceSport 41.2 41 ADVERTISING AND SPONSORSHIP

41.2 Application for approval is made by the Competitor through their member account on the official DSA website, and is determined by the DSA National Board, which may approve the application, refuse it, approve it subject to conditions, or withdraw an approval previously given. (a) An application must include an image of the logo or label as it will appear on the attire, its dimensions and intended position, the identity of the Sponsor or manufacturer, and the nature of the support provided. (b) The DSA Marketing Committee may require that no advertising logos be worn at a particular competition or during a particular DSA-organised function where the content conflicts with any DSA sponsorship arrangement. (c) Approval of a Sponsor logo is given in respect of the applicant only. Approval of a Designer Label is given in respect of the manufacturer or maker and is not limited to the applicant — see Rule 41.5.

Rules of DanceSport - Competition Attire

Means the clothing worn by a Competitor on the dance floor during a competition. Competition Attire is the attire of every Competitor taking part in an event, whether or not that Competitor is the person being adjudicated.

Rules of DanceSport 17.13 17 REGULATIONS FOR COMPETITION ORGANISERS

17.13 It is a condition of registration that the Competition Organiser must clearly display the current approved DanceSport Australia logo on all Promotional Material for a registered competition. (a) The logo must be the current approved version obtained from the Competition Organiser Portal and must be used in accordance with the DSA Style Guide. It must not be altered, distorted, recoloured, cropped or obscured, and must be reproduced at a size that keeps it clearly legible. (b) Where Promotional Material displays the logo of a sponsor or other third party, the DSA logo must be displayed no less prominently. (c) Display of the logo does not satisfy the separate requirement in Rule 15.4 to declare that the competition is licenced by DanceSport Australia.

Rules of DanceSport 41.4 41 ADVERTISING AND SPONSORSHIP

41.4 Approved logos and labels worn on the competition attire of a Competitor shall conform to the following conditions: A man/boy/leader may wear no more than three (3), and a woman/girl/follower no more than two (2), counted in total and including any Designer Label. No single logo or label may exceed 40 square cm. They may only be displayed and located on the hip, waist, chest, or sleeves. Each reproduction of any flag displayed on an athlete’s costume counts as one (1) for the purposes of this Rule.

Rules of DanceSport 41.6 41 ADVERTISING AND SPONSORSHIP

41.6 Notwithstanding the exclusions in the definition of Sponsor, the DSA National Board may approve the wearing of a logo where it is satisfied that the person, business or organisation provides genuine and material support to the Competitor’s participation in DanceSport, and that approval would not give rise to an unfair advantage or bring the adjudication of any event into question.

Rules of DanceSport 41.9 41 ADVERTISING AND SPONSORSHIP

41.9 A Competitor who wears a logo or label that has not been approved under this Rule, or that does not conform to Rule 41.4, risks disqualification. The Chairperson of Adjudicators may require the logo or label to be removed or covered before the Competitor takes part in any further round or event.

You are searching the rules that begin on 1 January 2027, not the rules in force today.
A written summary is a reading aid only. The wiki clause is the rule - follow the links and read it before you rely on it. If a summary and a clause ever disagree, the clause wins. Anything that turns on your age group, division or the status of the event should be checked with the DSA office.

How to search, how to read an answer, and how to quote a rule

Not yet in force

These rules begin on 1 January 2027. Until then follow the current Competition Rules - they are what applies at a competition today.

Why a wiki

One current version, always. No circulating PDFs, no wondering which copy is the latest, and every clause individually addressable.

What the search does

It looks through every clause for the ones that fit your question, then explains them in plain English with the clause numbers shown.

What it does not do

It does not make rulings, interpret a clause for your particular case, or replace a decision of the Board or a Committee. It points you at the rule - reading it is still yours to do.
